School Board Stops Plans For Facility To Save Tree

By John Elizondo

WACO - The Waco Independent School District has decided to stop plans to build an athletic facility that would cut down a 300-year-old tree. Members of the school board voted Thursday to leave the tree alone.

Several people spoke out against the plan to build a football field next to Indian Spring Middle School where a live oak tree has stood for hundreds of years. There were previous mentions that the district would either shrink the field or build it away from the tree.

Tree experts said the field would have to be located at least 10 feet away from the roots, but the tree still could be in danger from the lack of moisture or nutrients.

Next Thursday the school district will decide where to build the field so the tree won't be disturbed.
