WACO- Waco ISD is having to tackle some heavy traffic flow problems at University high school.
After consolidating more than a dozen schools and combining AJ Moore academies with University High School. Parents may have to go a different way to pick their kids up from school.
"More and more parents are taking their kids to school on the first day or first several days," said district spokesperson Dale Caffey.
The student population grew from 1,300 to 1,900 after the consolidation.
"We are taking a look at how much traffic we have at the schools," Caffey explained. "We are taking a look at traffic flow and where students are dismissing if they are drivers."
Caffey says parents often park across the street to avoid the traffic--which causes students to jay walk.
To reduce long lines, traffic, and jay walking students, University high school Principal Bill Shepard says parents are being directed to take a different route.
"Parent pick-up has basically moved from this side which is mainly a drop off area and we've moved to a larger parking lot so cars can loop around," Shepard said.
But there are still those who don't follow the rules. If students do decide to jay walk Waco ISD police are right there to act quickly.
The district is hoping that more students will catch the bus to reduce heavy traffic. Due to the population increase the district also hopes the City of Waco will set up a school zone in front of University so the streets will be safer.
