KILLEEN - A man who claims he's one of Major Nidal Hasan's "close friends" is now behind bars. Authorities said they arrested the suspect for making a terroristic threat against his estranged wife and her friend.
Killeen Police arrested Elsayed Elzarek Behairy, Friday, after a female made contact with officers and advised she had been assaulted by her husband. He also threatened her life during this domestic dispute.
An arrest affidavit reads Behairy came over to his wife's residence stating he wanted to kiss his son good night. But when he arrived, he ended up assaulting the woman.
The couple had been separated for nearly two years.
Records show the suspect told his wife he has been watching her and her 23-year-old male friend. He told the woman, she would never be able to marry anyone else.
According to police records, Behairy said:
"I have enough money to hire someone to kill both of you," he added, "I'm like brother Hasan, if someone embarrasses me and my religion, I will kill them."
This could have been an attempt to carryout a so-called "honor" killing. Honor murders usually target women who are accused of dishonoring their families by being disobedient or unfaithful.
The wife told police she believes Behairy will kill her, and fears for her life. She said Behairy was, in fact, close friends with Hasan.
In addition to Terroristic Threat, Behairy is also facing immigration violations. Authorities said he's here illegally from Egypt.
Behairy was transferred to the Bell County Jail Sunday, his bond was set at $5,000.
Regarding the arrest of Behairy, Killeen Police Chief Dennis Baldwin stated, "His arrest is related to a family violence case where he threatened to kill his wife on August 16, 2012. The charge of Terroristic Threat was filed against Mr. Behairy and was directly related to the family violence incident."
Authorities said the charge has nothing to do with Behairy's relation to Hasan.
