State House District 59 Election Results

By: Stephanie Jacksis

TEXAS - A stunning upset Tuesday night for the State House District 59 seat.  Challenger J.D. Sheffield of Coryell County was able to defeat six-term incumbent Sid Miller of Stephenville in the 2012 Republican Election Run-Off.

With a 100% of the precincts reporting, Sheffield rode a big advantage in Coryell county, with a ten-point win overall.  Sheffield came out on top by a 55-45 margin, including grabbing 72% of the votes in Coryell County.

Sheffield ran against Miller in the 2010 Primary and lost, but Tuesday the tide turned heavily in favor of Sheffield with some help from public education interests.

In 2012 Primary Elections, Miller won by 180 votes.

Sheffield who was a small town doctor for 19 years pulled the upset, and his supporters said it's a sign voters are wanting a change.

Sheffield's campaign platform focused on getting better health care for small towns and supported public education.

Miller who is a rancher, authored Texas' law requiring a woman have a sonogram before getting an abortion.  He was a key ally for Republican Gov. Rick Perry and House Speaker Joe Straus. Miller is the chairman of the House Homeland Security and Public Safety Committee.
