Posted:

The Waco-McLennan County Public Health District has received confirmation of 2 new West Nile Virus cases on Wednesday. This brings the total number to 7 cases.

The elderly and immune-comprised are at greatest risk for severe complications to West Nile Virus.   The symptoms of a severe West Nile illness are:

  • Fever
  • Sever headache

  • Muscle aches

If you or anyone in your care has these symptoms the Health District recommends you seek medical attention.  Only a doctor can diagnose West Nile Virus.

West Nile Virus is spread by mosquitoes.  To protect from mosquito bites the Health District recommends the following:

  • DEET               Use mosquito repellant with the ingredient DEET.
  • Dawn/Dusk      Avoid the outside at dawn and dusk.  These are the times when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Dress               Wear long sleeves and pants to protect your skin.
  • Drain                Drain any standing or stagnant water
