TEMPLE - Central Texas is seeing our first major impact after Obamacare was upheld by the Supreme Court. It appears a major local health care provider is laying off more than a dozen workers.
Scott & White officials said the downsizing did not affect their medical staff like doctors and nurses. Instead the cut was strictly within their Sales and Marketing Department.
In a statement released Monday, officials said:
"As a part of a change in its business model, Scott & White Health Plan has put into motion a restructuring of its Sales and Marketing Department, based on a review of services, product lines and resources.
The Health Plan is introducing a referred broker strategy which moves much of the direct selling of group products from the Plan to key brokerage firms and agents in our service area in Central, East and West Texas.
This change in the business model will affect 14 Health Plan positions, representing 3% of total Health Plan administrative positions.
We recognize this is unsettling news, but this is the first major restructuring undertaken by Sales and Marketing in almost 30 years and it was a necessary step in light of the recent health care reform law and subsequent changes in the marketplace.
It has always been our mission to serve our members by providing access to the most personalized, comprehensive, and highest quality health care and this alignment advances our ability to fulfill that commitment to our members and the community."
