KILLEEN - Police arrested a Killeen woman at her residence in the 1600 block of W. Stan Schlueter, for Animal Cruelty charges Thursday morning.
Twenty-nine dogs were seized from the property.
Many were found in living quarters that were too small for their movement. The dogs were exposed to an increased risk of disease, because the dogs either did not have water, or the water was extremely dirty.
The crates had excessive amounts of feces inside them, forcing the animals to live and sleep in these conditions.
"You don't want to see children hurt, and you certainly don't want to see animals hurt either," KPD Carroll Smith said. "It kind of tugs at your heart strings."
Animal Control Officers issued numerous citations to the resident in the past, but little improvement was made for those animals. The dogs were covered in ticks and fleas, and several are suffering from skin problems.
The dogs are being held at Killeen Animal Control where they will be seen by a veterinarian. No word on how soon or if the animals will be available for adoption.
Several complaints about the animals' living conditions resulted in the arrest of Regina Arlene Long for Cruelty to Animals, a Class A Misdemeanor. She was taken to Killeen City Jail. Long is awaiting arraignment on Friday, June 29, 2012.
