Local food pantry to be hit harder this summer, needing donations

KILLEEN - With kids finally out of school for summer, parents will be responsible for putting two more meals on the table.  Families who don't usually go to the Killeen Food Care Center have already started coming.

"We do see usually a small increase in the number of families that come in over the summer, because ya know, the children are no longer in school," Food Care Center Administrator John Ott said.

Miriam Terrell said she's had to use the Food Care Center in the past, and wanted to help make a difference.  So Fort Hood's Directorate of Logistics put together a food drive and donated nearly 3,000 pounds of food Thursday.

"We focused on the kids," Terrell said.  "So raviolis, fruit, beans, rice, things that go a long way."

But volunteers fear this won't be enough.

"We're open 16 days in a month, so it takes a lot of 3,000 pound donations," Ott said.  "But every thousand pounds we get is very very welcome."

The center has been open for more than 20 years, and feeds families from all over Central Texas from Lampasas to Nolanville, Florence, Copperas Cove, Killeen, and Fort Hood.

"We've been here for quite a while," Ott said.  "The number of people we serve has gone up slightly over the last couple of years and I don't see the number declining."

Each day they're open, the center distributes about 5,000 pounds of food.

If you'd like to help, food and monetary donations can be dropped off at:
