New Baylor Stadium could revitalize Waco business

WACO - A massive construction project on the horizon in Waco is fueling development along the Brazos River front. Businesses like Outdoor Waco are already banking on the appeal of the future Baylor Stadium.

The outdoor adventure shop opened just over three weeks ago and is taking full advantage of its proximity to the Brazos River.  The business rents out paddle boards, kayaks and canoes by the hour, seven days a week.

General manager Trinity Robb said opening a store along the Brazos was a huge draw.

"[The Brazos River] is an excellent, rare, natural resource in a city that just hasn't been used that much," said Robb.

It may be less about the river and more about what could soon be on the river by 2014; Baylor Stadium. The proposed football stadium will attract tens of thousands of fans on game day and draw them into the city. That's great news for a business like Outdoor Waco.

"If there's a marina like the drawing depicts," explained Robb, "I'm sure people are going to be traveling up and down more often on the river front, so there's going to be more businesses."

Folks at the Greater Waco Chamber have a similar vision. They've been working with the City of Waco for years to revitalize the river front, and they're confident they're making progress. However, Lesly Rascoe, Vice President of Communications for the Greater Waco Chamber, said Baylor Stadium is only one contributor.

"Add the momentum and synergy of a new stadium and a signature bridge and some other factors along there," explained Rascoe, "and it's really the time for some great success to be seen by businesses along the river."

Outdoor Waco is just one business banking on timing. Another business, a specialty coffee shop, could soon open in the vacant space behind Outdoor Waco. Rascoe said these two businesses are signs of what is surely to come over the coming years.
