New tattoo convention comes to town

by Adam Shear

WACO - The Waco Convention Center opened its doors to a unique three day tattoo convention for the first time ever.

"You're going to see things at this show that you never thought you would see in your life," said Amy Garfield, "Immersed in Ink" event organizer.

Activities at the Waco "Immersed in Ink" convention include live tattooing, concerts, performances, and other entertainment.

The big draw however, was the option to get a tattoo drawn by artists from all over the country.

"Where else in the world are you going to end up with 70 tattooers under one roof and all of them are good," said Mickey Eason from Inner City Ink in Tulsa, OK. "You just got to walk around and look at portfolios and see what kind of style you're into, the client is into, and maybe get some education on the art of tattooing."

Tattoo education is one of the event organizers' main goals for the convention. They want people to know what getting a tattoo is really about.

"Tattooing is an art and it is gorgeous," said Garfield. "People don't realize that it's not just a prison thing or criminal thing anymore. Now it is an art form and just the medium of it is amazing."

Thousands are expected to attend this convention and most just cannot wait to come back next year.

"I just wish I had more money to get another tattoo," said event-goer Nathan Witt. "It's addicting. Once you get one you got to have another one."

The convention runs through Sunday night and will end in an awards ceremony to celebrate the event's best artwork.
