KILLEEN (ORIGINAL STORY) - A Fort Hood soldier is now dead after a motorcycle accident that took place after police tried to break up a street race.

An officer was in the area of Trimmier Rd. and Stan Schlueter Loop at 12:56 a.m. on Tuesday when he saw three motorcycles traveling westbound on Stan Schlueter; two of the motorcycles were racing at high speeds.

The officer was able to stop one of the racing motorcycles on Stan Schlueter but the other racing motorcycle continued to travel west at a high rate of speed.  The third motorcycle turned off and left the area.

Another officer attempted to stop the second racing  motorcycle but the driver refused to stop; a pursuit ensued and the motorcycle turned north onto Clear Creek Rd still traveling at a high rate of speed. At this time, a red Pontiac Grand Prix was exiting the parking lot of the McDonalds in the 3700 block of Clear Creek Rd. At 12:58 a.m., the motorcycle collided with the driver's side of the Grand Prix causing the vehicle to overturn onto its roof. The driver was ejected from the motorcycle landing on the opposite side of the vehicle.

The driver of the motorcycle, identified as a 31-year-old Fort Hood soldier was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy is set to be performed at the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas.

The driver of the Grand Prix was extracted from the vehicle using the Jaws of Life; he was airlifted to Scott & White Memorial Hospital with leg injuries.  The passenger of the Grand Prix was transported to Metroplex Hospital with non life threatening injuries.

This crash continues to be investigated.
