Waco ISD holds public forums over possible school closings

WACO - Plans to consolidate Waco public schools have been discussed for weeks, but on Thursday the district held its first town hall meeting.

Before the meeting parents were given handouts that summarized two plans to help the school board solve its funding issue. Parents and students were able to question the school board on both.

WISD Superintendent Bonnie Cain warned parents, teachers, and students that in a few years the district would face bankruptcy if cuts were not made.

Those cuts involved closing some schools and combining them with others. Parents and students responded with some tough questions for the district.

"These children are attending other school districts, they are not in our schools, is there a way or have you tried to get these children back into our school district to get the money we need," asked concerned A.J. Moore Parent LaTonya Henderson.

A.J. Moore is just one of the many schools that might be forced to close it's doors, and many former students were there to defend their school.

James Y. Rauhat is an A.J. Moore grad and founder of wacoforajmoore.com.

"What happens with these schools and what happens with these graduates is affecting the community. Anybody who is in Waco should be involved with this decision," said Rauhat.

Before the meeting several students were outside protesting, but at the end of the day the decision falls into the hand of the school board trustees.

The next town hall meeting is scheduled for Monday, January 9th and A.J. Moore students say they will be there to protest.
