Six arrested for allegedly smuggling tobacco

By Erica L. Rodriguez

GATESVILLE - Six people are facing charges after they allegedly smuggled tobacco into the Coryell County Jail.

All six people were arrested and charged with Introduction of a Prohibited Substance into a Correctional Facility which is a state felony.

Authorities believe that the smuggling began back in January. They say they received a tip that tobacco was being smuggled into the jail and given to inmates. The jail does not allow tobacco or smoking of any kind.

One of the people arrested, 28-year-old Jakes Nelson Rhoades, was a jailer for Coryell County. Two of the people, 39-year-old Marshall Shane Blanchard and 31-year-old Stephen Shane Smith, were inmates in the jail.

42-year-old Katherine Martin Anderson Rhodes girlfriend was also arrested for her apparently helping out as well. 40-year-old Vicki Renee Barnhill and 31-year-old Christopher Lee Miller allegedly helped out with the smuggling, but it's not clear if they were inmates.
