State to approve ban on salvia

By Erica L. Rodriguez

AUSTIN - Salvia may go the way of K2. The Texas House gave the final approval on a bill that will ban Salvia for good.

Once approved by the Senate, the powerful hallucinogen will be illegal in the state of Texas.

The ban is part of the Texas Controlled Substances Act. Anyone caught buying, selling, or making Salvia will face a minimum Class A misdemeanor.

Salvia divinorum is the most powerful naturally-occurring hallucinogen. It acts very quickly and has negative effects on the mental health of the user.

Texas would the 24th state to ban the herbal drug.

"This is a strong vote and an important step to help protect Texans from dangerous drugs," said Rep. Charles "Doc" Anderson of Waco.
