Update: Bodies of man, son, recovered from Lake Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, Texas (AP) _ Georgetown police are investigating why a man, with his 5-year-old son in his car, drove the vehicle off a boat ramp into a lake, killing them both.

The bodies of 31-year-old Scott Douglas Hughes of Georgetown and his son, Ethan, have been recovered from Lake Georgetown. Assistant Chief Kevin Stofle says both were dead at the scene early Sunday.

Autopsies have been ordered, and preliminary results have come back.

"The latest news that we have is that the preliminary autopsy results have come back and we know Ccott and his son died there at scene and the cause was drowning," Stofle said Monday.

Police are still waiting for toxicology results to come back, so far they have interviewed around a dozen witnesses.

Four witnesses reported seeing the car drive off the ramp around 11 p.m. Saturday.

Stofle says about a dozen law officers who responded went into the water to try to rescue the pair, at a depth of about 20 feet.

Stofle says two of the car's windows were down when the vehicle was recovered from the lake.

Georgetown is about 20 miles north of Austin.
