Rash of bed bugs affecting hotels in Killeen

KILLEEN - They're popping up at hotels in Killeen and causing a menace to guests who are staying there.

At least half dozen complaints about bed bugs been reported, all centered along Highway 190.

News Channel 25 received two different complaints from people who were concerned about their hotel room conditions. Those people were staying at the Hallmark Inn and Executive Inn in Killeen. Both managers confirmed cases, but they declined to go on camera.

News Channel 25 spoke to the Bell County Health Inspector who said it's unlike anything he's seen before.

"I've been with Bell County for 20 years. In the last 12 to 24 months, all of a sudden we've had at least half a dozen complaints, most confirmed. Prior to that I can't ever recall getting a bed bug complaint," said George Highsmith, Bell County Health Inspector.

The patrons that called News Channel 25 said their incidents happened within the past week.

A manager at the Hallmark Inn says an exterminator has been called in and surrounding rooms have been cleared out to address the bed bug problem.  Highsmith confirmed that the Executive Inn has taken the proper steps to clean out their rooms.

By Texas law, hotels are not allowed to rent out rooms that have infestations, but there is also no provision that says they have to clean the rooms out.
