Runoff election necessary in District 22 State Senate seat

WACO - The biggest race area-wide on the may 8 election was for the 10-month term filling Kip Averitt's senate seat, however, it was not decided.

Former Senator David Sibley is the leader, but was not able to avoid a runoff with retired Army Col. Brian Birdwell.

Those two-bested Baylor professor Gayle Avant and Darren Yancey of Burleson.

Sibley was the senator for nine of the ten counties in District 22 before Kip Averitt, and wants to finish out Averitt's unexpired term.

But, Birdwell got a lot of votes in rural areas, and now they'll have to be canvassed, and Governor Rick Perry will have to call a special election to decide that race.

The best guess is that will happen early in June.
