Popular past time can turn dangerous and illegal

by Loren Korn

WACO-Geocaching as a hobby has been around for a few years, but it's just recently become a very popular past time. However, the treasure you find could not only put you in a dangerous situation, it could land you in behind bars.

It's supposed to be fun. You log on to the web site, type in your zip code, log the coordinates onto your global positioning system and start your search. So what's the problem?

"There could be some sicko out there that decides to leave something of nature that could harm you when you open the box. That's a possibility and always is," Steve Anderson, of the Waco Police Department said.

And it's not just safety that Anderson said you should worry about.

"I'm sure there are some people out there that do violate the law. They actually placed the geocaches on private property and it shouldn't be there. Then it could turn into vandalism and theft," Anderson said.

Both of the boxes News Channel 25 found were on public places but that's not always the case. And that's how you get into trouble.

"The person that placed it there could be looked at as trespassing by property owner and then everybody else that went looking for it obviously could be filed for trespassing," Anderson said.

News Channel 25 found two places where geocaches are currently illegally placed.

"There's always going to be that criminal element out there that's going to take something that's fun, enjoyable to thousands of people and turn it into bad," Anderson said.
