KOUNTZE, Texas (AP) - A grandmother drowned in Village Creek trying to help 1 of her grandchildren who appeared to be in distress in the water.

The Hardin County Sheriff's Office identified the victim as 52-year-old Connie Porche Thornton, of Starks, La.

The drowning happened Tuesday about one mile from the creek near the Highway 327 bridge in between Silsbee and Kountze.

The television station reported that Sheriff Ed Cain said Thornton might have suffered cramps when she went under the water.
