BAYTOWN, Texas (AP) - A gunman who shot and killed a sheriff's deputy inside a mobile home in Southeast Texas was found dead in a bedroom following a day-long stand-off.
Officials are trying to determine whether Gilbert Ortez Jr. shot himself or had been shot by a Texas trooper during the stand-off in the Baytown area.
Ortez was a former reserve police officer for the town of Kenefick.
Deputies went to a mobile home park yesterday morning after a meter reader sent to shut off water service to a mobile home fled when a woman came out and opened fire.
Pamela Leggett was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and resisting arrest.
Authorities say Ortez also was at the mobile home at the time and fatally shot 31-year-old Deputy Shane Detwiler in the head.
Negotiators tried for hours to establish contact with Ortez -- without success.
